Evaluation

Evaluation

The assignment was handed out on the 15th of April. The tasks we were set to complete were to write up our own proposal, research, exploration and experimentation, finished work and a formal presentation. The area’s I specialised in for this project were Animation and film, 3D Design and Multimedia and Web Authoring. The completion date was the 25th of June 2010.

The task I set myself to complete was to create an Architectural Flythrough of a penthouse. From this I would design a Poster, Brochure and Website showing the processes of my assignment. I also designed my own Risk assessment sheets.

At the start of the project I designed my own Gantt chart to plan my tasks out and give me a time schedule. For each week I filled in a goal sheet showing what will be completed and how I will complete it. I also made a list of what I needed to research for my tasks set out. This is all on my blog.

There was a lot of research and planning needed for this project. I first visited the library to find important architects that had an affect on the industry. I found a book that proved that there were 3 architects called Frank Lloyd Write, Mies Van Der Rohe and Le Corbusier.I then Researched into different Flythrough’s. I looked into what software was used and what camera shots, lighting, camera movements, timing and audio were used for the flythrough itself. I visited several interior design shops to get brochures and magazines for my research. I also visited the Think-tank museum in Birmingham. The museum itself didn't have a lot on architecture but I was able to get lots of texture rubbings and pictures of the building and other buildings around Birmingham which was very interesting and helpful for research. This was risk assessed.

I then started the planning for my penthouse. Firstly I researched into existing penthouses which gave me ideas and inspirations for what I wanted my modern penthouse to look like. I then researched into different floor plans and designed my own and eventually came up with a final floor plan. I also made a list of furnishments and objects that were needed and then from scratch, designed and sketched them.

The experimentation I did was a sculpture of my roof design and a sculpture of my bed design. These were both done with crafting polystyrene and both risk assessed.

Once this was all designed I moved onto building the penthouse foundations. The Software I used to build my penthouse and environment in was MAYA. This is an advanced programme that specialises in 3D Modelling. Other programs that were used were illustrator (Floor plans), Photoshop (textures), Dreamweaver (website), Final Cut Pro (video) and Garage Band (audio). I demonstrated the different stages, objects and problems I went through on my Blog.

I only had one major problem in this project and it is the same problem I have had in each project. This is the rendering stage. I saved all my work with the right settings for a render of my penthouse. When I came to look at the complete render, the textures had disappeared and moved to a different file directory. This mistake set me back two days but I was able to Re- render and get back on track for the hand in date. I rendered in Mental Ray.

I was very impressed with my poster and brochure designs. Once they had been created in Photoshop, I printed them in A3 and A3 square. I spray mounted them both onto hard black card which gave them a professional look. This stage was risk assessed as I had to use a Stanley knife a spray mount.

Overall I think the project went well and I have enjoyed making my own tasks and planned each stage out. I am proud of my final Flythrough and the poster and brochure.

Renders

Final product

I rendered the whole thing with just 2 cameras. one camera was set up for the opening door scene and the other was set for the whole penthouse. the whole penthouse was 2500 frames which gave me approximately a minute flying round.

Rendering

Mental ray
Mental Ray offers physically accurate lighting for photorealistic rendering of images. Also a distributed rendering solution that works independently of certain Autodesk 3D software through a command-line interface. A robust shading language that enables you to extend the extensive shader library in Autodesk 3D software to create desired rendering effects. Mental Ray is an industry-standard rendering software found in leading film, broadcast, web multimedia and marketing, and design visualization facilities around the world.

building in environment

Sky scraper development

I started off with trying to build a block and extruding every single window but this would take too long with modeling and texturing. so i designed a tall narrow building with stylish modern long windows going up the building.

Texturing

I used the Uv texture editor because I had problems with some alignment. I also extruded some objects when textured and this made the texture stretch.

hyper-shader and models

It is important that you name every texture you do because it will cause confusion and also if you are importing objects in, you may have two textures with the same name and they could overwrite each other. I will also try to keep each object in the lowest possible poly. I do this so all rendering will be faster and this will reduce any unforeseen problems that could occur.

Building complete

Now everything is complete, I can now texture the exterior and interior of my building.

Objects

I have now built the majority of objects needed for my penthouse. These are some examples /\

I try to Keep each object as low poly as I can.

Penthouse pre-viz

Today I built a quick model to show how the penthouse will sit on top on the skyscraper.

Maya

I will not texture any of the objects before they are in place, this is incase I have named two different textures on two different objects. They will over-right each texture when I import the object in. I will also name every object I build in the Outliner so there is no confusion and it makes it easier to find the object in its right place.

Objects/Furnishings to build

I have listed every single object that will be built for the penthouse. I will also sketch each object out from scratch. Once the design is done I will model each piece before modeling the penthouse structure and foundations.

Existing penthouses

By looking at existing penthouses, it helps me to see what looks eye catching and what fits well to be in a bachelor pad penthouse. It also gives me ideas on how I can design and model the furnishings for the penthouse.

Thinktank Museum

Today I visited the Thinktank Museum. The museum itself didn't have a lot on architecture but I was able to get lots of texture rubbings and pictures of the building and other buildings around Birmingham which were very interesting and helpful for research.

Posters and Brochures

For both of these topics I took existing pieces and annotated them. Showing the advantages and disadvantages of what they are trying to portray. I have to wait for my final pieces because i would like to put some of my renders in as images.
What I can do before is produce layouts of what is needed for my poster and Brochure.

Flythrough research

I have researched into 4 Flythroughs. Two flythroughs are taken from the Archiform website which is a well known architecture pre-visualization site. I have researched into their:
Camera movements
Lighting
Audio
Resolution
What is being filmed
Timing

All these components are very important because i will need them to be right for my flythrough

Floor plans

Finished design without color texture visualization.

Floor Plan Research

I started to research into different floor plans showing the difference between really simple ones to high quality color ones. I then used illustrator to start my floor plan experimentation.

Wednesday, 5 May 2010

Interior design

Today i visited several interior design shops to view their designs and take brochures and catalogues for research

Modern Movements

I went to the Library to find important architects that had a affect on the industry. I found found a book that proved that there were 3 architects called Frank Lloyd Write, Mies Van Der Rohe and Le Corbusier.

final logo

logo research

I first started with researching into existing architecture logos so I could see what looks best for my logo. I then picked out what did look best and listed them ranging from text fonts to what colours were used. After that I sketched some ideas out then experimented with my favorite ones in illustrator and photoshop.
